Succubus Heat book review

Georgina Kincaid, a minion of hell, is back for a fourth adventure and it’s almost too hot to handle

Georgina Kincaid is a succubus. That is, she’s sold her soul to the devil and is now in the service of Hell. As well as doing the underworld’s bidding, she must also seduce guys in order to drain them of energy to sustain herself. And not just any guy – the more ‘pure’ his soul, the more energy Georgina will receive, whilst at the same time shortening his life.

Succubus Heat is the fourth in the Georgina Kincaid series and although I haven’t read any of the others, this book still made perfect sense. They’ve clearly been written to work as standalone novels as well as a series.

In this instalment Georgina is being a bit of a bitch. She recently split up with the guy she believes is the love of her life, but being a succubus and all, things got complicated. She only had to kiss Seth and she would drain his life force, and she wasn’t willing to considerably shorten his life for the sake of intimacy. Unfortunately, the whole no-sex thing got between them, and they parted ways. The result is Georgina behaving like a bear with a sore head and annoying all of those around her.

Her demon boss, Jerome, is so sick of her attitude that he decides to ‘lend’ her to another demon as a favour. However, his motives aren’t utterly selfless. Jerome also wants Georgina to spy on the demon and report back. Used to this kind of behaviour, Georgina departs. However, things start to go horribly wrong when suddenly her ‘abilities’ disappear, and she’s not the only one.

Turns out that in her absence Jerome has been kidnapped, and unless he’s found soon, there’s going to be a new demon in charge of Seattle. As much as Georgina and her boss don’t always see eye-to-eye, she knows she could have a much worse boss and so sets out to find him, enlisting the help of a few friends. Minus their powers, Georgina and her pals find things much more difficult than normal, but at the same time embrace the things they couldn’t do as immortals; which for Georgina includes sex without repercussions.

Soon she and Seth are back in one another’s arms. Georgina knows it can’t last, but she can’t help herself. In the back of her mind is the fact that Seth is now dating her best friend, and, oh yes, her boss is still missing. Georgina has a lot to deal with, and not much time. Will everything turn out for the best? Will she get her man? Only one way to find out…

I thought Succubus Heat was fabulous. I’d heard of Richelle Mead previous to reading this book; it’s evident her reputation goes before her. This is a really well-written book. It’s pacy, funny, exciting and sexy. You don’t need to have read the previous novels to ‘get it’, but I will be reading them regardless. Highly recommended for fans of the supernatural, but I suspect it is more a girl thing.
